On May 2, Ocean Recovery Community Alliance (ORCA) hosted a volunteer beach cleanup at Narrow River in Rhode Island, where 22 volunteers removed 364 pounds of debris from the shoreline. The cleanup focused on protecting the river’s edge and surrounding habitat, with volunteers spending the morning collecting litter and debris from the waterfront.
Event Details
Narrow River continues to be one of the most important waterways we work in throughout Rhode Island. Volunteers covered sections of shoreline where debris regularly collects, depending on tides and weather conditions. Every bag filled and every piece removed helps improve conditions along the riverbank.
With 22 volunteers showing up and giving their time, the cleanup made a noticeable impact across the area. From larger debris to smaller plastic fragments, every piece collected helps prevent pollution from moving further into the waterway.
Partner Recognition
A big thank you to the Narrow River Preservation Association for being such an incredible partner over the past three years. It means a lot to continue showing up together for a place that so many people care deeply about.
We also want to thank ORCA Alliance member Shore Soap Co for co-sponsoring and supporting this cleanup effort.
What Was Found
Volunteers removed a mix of debris during the cleanup, including smaller plastics, bottles, and litter that can easily break down into microplastics over time. These materials often accumulate along river edges and throughout the watershed.
Why It Matters
Debris left along rivers and shorelines does not stay in one place for long. Smaller pieces eventually move through the water system, affecting wildlife and contributing to long-term pollution issues throughout coastal Rhode Island.
Regular volunteer beach cleanup efforts help keep these areas healthier and reduce the amount of waste entering the ocean.
